Vision, Mission and Values definitions

  • Definitions may and do differ
  • Use Business Motivation Model if you can

Vision

  • Bringing things into focus. You get what you focus on.
  • Defines the desired or intended future state of an organization or world
  • Vision is a long term view

Examples:

  • "A world without poverty"
  • "Every family should afford a car"

Mission

  • What do we need to do every day to get closer to the vision

Examples:

  • "We fight the poverty by giving away money to poor people"
  • "We produce affordable cars"


Values (AKA Behaviours)

  • Helps making decisions. Choices which do not adhere to values are not going to be implemented. (e.g. "Do not be evil")
  • Are types of rules and behaviours which allow us to get to the situation described in mission
  • Describes behaviours which should helps to move in this direction (how can we get there)
  • Beliefs that are shared among the stakeholders of an organization
  • Drive an organization's culture and priorities
  • Getting more participation really makes a difference
  • In contrast to the creation of a mission, everyone in a company should have something to say about values


Exercises

  • Max 5 groups
  • Decide who are the audience of your strategic plan.
  • Write your company's vision, mission and values.
